The AIA is an organization originally founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts by Harvard University professor Charles Eliot Norton and his friends and colleagues. The first meeting was in 1879 to form a society "for furthering and directing archaeological and artistic investigation and research." Norton was elected the first president.
